MSC chief to speak at World Ports Conference

We are delighted to announce that Søren Toft, the Chief Executive Officer of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), will be addressing the 2021 World Ports Conference. Before joining MSC, he was Chief Operating Officer and Member of the Executive Board at Maersk, the company where he started his maritime career in 1994. In 2019, Mr Toft was one of the driving forces behind the Getting To Zero Coalition, which today groups more than 140 companies determined to develop and deploy commercially viable deep sea zero emission vessels by 2030. Don’t miss today’s webinar on diversity and innovation!

With imaginative senior appointments seen recently at some port authorities, we may be witnessing the beginning of a sea change in port management diversity. How can an injection of diverse, new blood into both senior and middle management at ports propel innovation? These questions will be the focus of our next World Ports Conference webinar, to be held today at 3 PM CET.  Panellists include Flor Pitty (Chair IAPH Women’s Forum and Director-General Ports and Ancillary Services Panama Maritime Authority), Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou (President WISTA International and CEO Tototheo Maritime), Taha Riani (Managing Partner Allyens) and Bhavini Bhikabhai (People Director Europe and Russia DP World). They will discuss how port and maritime organisations can obtain the most from policies that embrace diversity and inclusiveness. The discussion will be guided by Ines Nastali, Editor of the IAPH magazine Ports & Harbors. The webinar is free of charge and you can register on the website of the World Ports Conference.

Last chance to submit projects for Sustainability Awards

31 March is the closing date for IAPH member ports to submit their projects for the 2021 edition of the World Ports Sustainability Awards. The competition aims to reward best practices and encourage ports to share their projects through the online portfolio of the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP). The project entries for the awards must correspond to one of the five WPSP themes. Projects can be submitted by filling out the template form on the WPSP website. You can also view a short video explainer below from our Technical Director Antonis Michail on how to apply. As in previous years, projects will be assessed by a professional jury and the shortlist will be put to a public vote. Winners will be announced at the #IAPH2021 World Ports Conference next June. New report on resilient port transformations

The multiple drivers of change currently facing ports require a whole-systems approach before low-carbon, resilient port transformations can be realised says a new report from The Resilience Shift. The report closes the first phase of a dedicated project that brought together over thirty organisations from across the port value chain to identify the current and future resilience challenges facing port ecosystems and the actions needed to realise resilience opportunities and overcome resilience threats. The report identifies 36 current and future resilience challenges facing ports and examines the four main drivers of change: decarbonisation, technological change, port communities and the environment impacting the ports’ ecosystem. The report finds that embracing resilience can unite action on the main transformations the port industry is currently going through but also create new vulnerabilities. It also found that there is a fragmented nature to both port governance and the approach to the multiple transformative agendas. To overcome this, a whole-systems approach is needed on resilience, including strengthening relationships with critical port communities as well as cities and connecting infrastructure systems. There is also a need to demonstrate the value of port resilience to unlock the financing needed to achieve it and promote the right types of investments. We participated in the preparatory stages of the report and joined a number of stakeholder workshops and we are considering the results of the project as inputs for the IAPH Risk and Resilience Committee. The report is available here.

IAPH to take part in Small Cells World Summit 2021

With the adoption of 5G in some ports underway, the issue of coverage in remote areas of port landside infrastructure with limited mobile network coverage is becoming an issue of interest as reliable networks and connectivity are required. The Small Cells World Summit will take place online this year between 11-13 May and on the final day there will be a Ports Workshop, on how this coverage can be achieved including speakers from port locations such as Singapore and Houston. The session will include actual deployment case studies and input from network operators and neutral hosts. IAPH will also take part and the Small Cells Forum invites IAPH members to virtually attend by registering here and using the code EARLYPORTS valid until 2 April (free attendance for IAPH members) and code 50PORTS thereafter (50% discount for IAPH members after 2 April).

IMO to expand its portfolio of global and regional projects

One year after its creation, IMO’s Department for Partnerships and Projects has bold ambitions to expand its portfolio of global and regional projects. These new initiatives will further support developing countries to address the world’s most pressing ocean and environmental challenges, including climate change, marine litter and biodiversity. The Department, in 2021, will also be working with other divisions of IMO to identify and mobilise resources for projects on maritime digitalisation. A new global project will notably be launched to assist developing countries to implement electronic exchange of information in ports for ship clearance. To support better coordination and liaison, IMO has invited Member States to designate an IMO National Knowledge Partnership Officer, as a focal point for partnership dialogue between beneficiary and donor countries.
