The Autonomous Port of San Pedro is responsible for all port functions including operations of exploitation, services to ships, maintenance, renewal and extension of port infrastructure in San Pedro. However, most of the operational, piloting and towing functions of vessels are carried out by the private sector. The Port of San Pedro is one of the main economic infrastructures built after the independence of the Côte d’Ivoire. The construction of the port of San Pedro was part of the integrated development program initiated in the 1960s by the Ivorian government for, in particular: 1) reduce regional disparities by creating a development pole in the south-west of Côte d’Ivoire, and 2) serve as a transit port for neighboring landlocked countries (Mali, Forest Guinea, East Liberia).
