How will American Ports respond to geopolitical shifts?

Recent weeks have seen tariffs being raised between countries, the USTR proposing port fee increases on Chinese vessels and vessel operators, and a shift in the geopolitical landscape. What does this mean for trade, and in particular, for global ports? What can the maritime sector do to read between the lines of profound geopolitical changes? Next week, the latest in the 2025 IAPH-Mercator webinar series will explore possible answers to these questions. ‘Impact of Geopolitical Changes on Ports – what does the new global landscape mean for trade’ will take place on 17.00 CET/08.00 PST on March 12. IAPH Insider readers can register for the event here. Attendees will hear the views of Cary Davis, president and CEO of the American Association of Ports Authorities (AAPA) representing ports interests in Washington, in conversation with Victor Shieh, strategy & Communications director, IAPH. They will also be offered a market intelligence perspective on trade lane activity in the container sector from Container Trade Statistics CEO and former senior carrier executive Nigel Pusey, as well as an interview with Captain Allan Gray, who has recently joined Sentient Ports, an organisation offering the tools to support ports in evaluating and manage risk. Leading up to the IAPH World Ports Conference taking place in Kobe later this year, this IAPH-Mercator webinar series keeps members informed on hot topics due for discussion in October, when industry-leading speakers will gather for the association’s 70th anniversary conference.
