As part of its Technical Committee Days program, IAPH joined forces with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to explore current practices, challenges and opportunities in developing nature and people-positive port strategies. More than 60 participants from ports and port community stakeholders attended the dedicated joint technical workshop that took place in Singapore on the morning of Thursday 23 April. Following initial contributions by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the ports of Barcelona and Seattle, and built environmental services consultancy Arup, the participants reflected in groups on the current integration of nature and people strategies in ports, identifying common challenges and potential avenues for further developing such strategies. The workshop concluded that, although nature and people are central to port resilience, there is still a need for more concrete projects that can be scaled, demonstrate a clear business case, and be supported by appropriate metrics and financial mechanisms to help balance long-term risks with day-to-day operational and business priorities. WEF and IAPH will be exploring further cooperation on nature and people related initiatives in the near future.
