Registration is now open for the third in this year’s series of #IAPH2026 webinars, counting down to the IAPH World Port Conference in London this November. On Wednesday 6 May (17.00 CEST / 08.00 PDT) join IAPH technical director Antonis Michail as he tackles the topic of underwater radiated noise (URN) with an expert panel. Antonis will be joined by Cheryl Ng, ECHO program specialist – collaborative initiatives at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Rachel Aronson, program director for Quiet Sound and Eduardo Ramos, senior data analyst at OceanScore. URN generated by commercial shipping can have short-term and long-term negative effects on marine life, especially marine mammals. Yet, there is still little understanding of how responsible operational practices and initiatives by vessels and ports can reduce the serious impact of URN. The session will reveal the latest strategies and technologies for mitigating URN and its effects. The panel will unpack ongoing regulatory discussions of URN at the IMO and explore the recently launched URN module within IAPH’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which can be used by ports and ships to ‘turn down the volume’ on this critical shipping output.
