ESI transition team appointed

The IAPH Environmental Ship Index (ESI) stands on the eve of a major transition, both in terms of its content development and internal organisation. These changes will see an expanded suite of performance modules to support ports and vessel owners on the journey to decarbonisation and lowering emissions. Coming online in January 2026, ESI’s revised and expanded offering will take into account a range of potential emissions, introduce a new GHG methodology, and reward innovation and application of zero-emissions techniques onboard vessels. This is also the time when the current administrator contract will conclude. IAPH has chosen to open a bidding process for an external partner that can take on development and marketing responsibilities, in addition to the traditional administrator tasks. To ensure that this double transition runs smoothly, a dedicated, multidisciplinary team will be active in 2025, the year leading up to the changes, and in 2026, the first operational year of the new configuration. The transition team will be led by Patrick Verhoeven, IAPH managing director. The other members of the team are: Manfred Lebmeier, senior environmental advisor at Hamburg Port Authority; Tanya Ferry, managing director at environmental consultancy Panthalassa; and Nick Blackmore, IAPH business development director. The transition team will report to the IAPH board to prepare it for key decisions during the transition process and will duly consult the ESI board in the preparation of these decisions.
