More than 15 IAPH members from Malaysian and Japanese ports gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to hold a workshop on common regional themes on 27 November. A total of 50 participants were involved in themed sessions with discussions focused on several important topics. At a session dedicated to container logistics efficiency through digital transformation, vehicle booking systems CargoMove in Malaysia and CONPAS in Japan were compared and discussed. A session focusing on connectivity by rail examined access from hinterlands to container terminals in Malaysian ports utilizing on-dock rail facilities. Recent trends and future prospects for the cruise market in both regions were discussed in the next session, with additional focus on the challenges of providing onshore power to cruise ships. Also in the additional special session, Malaysian ports’ decarbonization initiatives were presented, and IAPH introduced the Environmental Ship Index, inviting all Malaysian member ports to participate, to give momentum in accelerating the decarbonization of shipping in Asian waters.
