#IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards: deadline extended!

The submission deadline for the #IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards competition has been extended until Friday 19 June. Member ports – and associate members acting on their behalf – should submit their sustainability projects using the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) dedicated online form found here. Projects will then be evaluated and scored by an independent jury against the evaluation criteria and will be highlighted on IAPH’s social media channels and on the WPSP website. Finalists in the six categories will be announced in August and the public will vote for their favourites online on the WPSP website. The most inspiring projects in each of the six Awards categories will be showcased during a prestigious dedicated ceremony to take place at the gala dinner of the #IAPH2026 World Ports Conference at the Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. Members will find all information related to the 2026 Awards in this year’s terms of reference. Save the Date: IAPH Harbor Café – mentoring programme

On 1 July, members are invited to join a special online Harbor Café introducing a new IAPH mentoring programme designed to strengthen technology leadership across the Association’s regular member ports. This one-year initiative will enable targeted knowledge transfer between experienced CIOs and CTOs and emerging or newly appointed technology leaders, creating valuable opportunities for professional development, peer learning, and leadership growth. At 13.00 CEST, join moderator Patrick Verhoeven (IAPH managing director) as he explores the new scheme with Jens Meier (IAPH president and Hamburg Port Authority CEO), Myriel Newerla (head of executive board office, Hamburg Port Authority) and Nicola Good (director, 8th Street Communications). During this session, the group will present the programme’s objectives, structure, timeline, and expected outcomes, as well as explain how ports can participate as mentors or mentees. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and explore how the programme can support their digital transformation ambitions. Whether you are an experienced technology executive eager to share your expertise, or a new leader seeking guidance, we encourage your port to get involved. Save the Date: Technical Committee Day, 2 November

Members of IAPH’s Technical Committees are invited to save the date of Monday 2 November for the next in-person Technical Committee Day, which will take place in London on the eve of the 2026 IAPH World Ports Conference, held 3-6 November. Following on from a successful ‘TC Days’ in Singapore in April (pictured), nine in-person-only technical sessions are planned in three parallel streams, followed by meetings of the main committees. A full agenda will be circulated in due course but critical topics likely to be covered include Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), sustainable cruise port accreditation, connected ports, and – ahead of MEPC 85 (30 Nov-3 Dec) – port readiness for clean marine fuels and onshore power supply (OPS). The main Climate & Energy Technical Committee working groups (CMF/PRL/OPS) are likely to meet during the week beginning Monday 26 October – the members of these working groups will be informed separately. #IAPH2026: Early Bird extended, new sessions announced

IAPH members are encouraged to register now for the IAPH World Ports Conference – the Early Bird ticket price has been extended to Tuesday 30 June. Taking place in London 3-6 November, #IAPH2026 will convene senior port professionals from across the world for four days of high-level dialogue – newly announced sessions promise to offer delegates valuable market intelligence to support strategic planning and investment decisions. On Tuesday 3 November, a plenary session will explore the forces shaping global shipping markets in a keynote delivered by Stephen Gordon, managing director, Clarksons Research. A discussion with Stephen and Niels Rasmussen, chief shipping analyst at BIMCO, moderated by IAPH’s Victor Shieh, will then dive further into the topic. On Wednesday 4 November, the conference will assess the future fuel landscape, where uncertainty rules but investment decisions cannot wait. Alexander Prokopakis, executive director, International Bunker Industry Association, will deliver a keynote and moderator Jackie Spiteri (managing director, SESG) will explore the topic with Alexander, and Peter Alkema, strategy lead harbourmaster division, Port of Amsterdam and chair of the IAPH Clean Marine Fuels Working Group. ESI Core webinar: what ports need to know

OceanScore, the administrator of Environment Ship Index (ESI), has organised a dedicated webinar for port users to explain upcoming changes to the scheme. Held on Monday June 15 at 10.00 CEST, the webinar will present the key development areas of ESI Core, outline the transition process, and answer any questions that users may have. ESI is undergoing its most ambitious evolution to date with the advent of ESI Core – also known as ESI 2.0. Due to come online on 1 January 2027, ESI Core introduces updates to reflect today’s shipping realities and an evolving regulatory landscape, raising the bar for environmental practices to new, yet realistic heights. The updated methodology strengthens incentives for measures that actively contribute to lower emissions, including cleaner fuels and technologies such as wind-assisted propulsion, air lubrication, or the use of onshore power. Later this month IAPH and Mercator will hold the latest edition in the #IAPH2026 webinar series, which is open for registration now. On Wednesday 24 June (10:00 CEST / 17:00 JST) join IAPH moderator Victor Shieh (director membership outreach & networks) and an expert panel to explore the topic of community building. The latest issue of Ports & Harbors magazine is available to read now. In this edition, Marika Calfas, CEO of NSW Ports and IAPH regional vice president for Asia, South East and Oceania, discusses the challenges and opportunities facing the port sector in 2026. IAPH and partners bring Port Endeavor to IHMA

A team made up of UNCTAD TrainForTrade’s Mark Assaf, Dominique Chantrel, Gonzalo Ayala, APEC’s Kim Mathys and IAPH’s Victor Shieh teamed up for the first ever tripartite-moderated Port Endeavor gameplay, which took place yesterday afternoon at the main stage of the Theater Zuidplein at the International Harbour Masters (IHMA) Conference in Rotterdam. Six teams, which included harbour masters, local college students, and IHMA president Captain Paul O’Regan (CCO and harbour master of the Port of Duqm), enjoyed several rounds of the game in splendid surroundings as part of the main programme of the conference. IAPH and IHMA jointly launched the Port Call Optimization (PCO) Guide at the most recent IMO FAL meeting; the organisations has since developed a version in Spanish with an Arabic version in the works.

IAPH meets with Greek ports community at Posidonia

IAPH technical director Antonis Michail visited the Posidonia exhibition in Athens, held 1-5 June, to meet with port and maritime transport stakeholders from across the world. During the event focused on ‘Greek ports, breakwaters of geopolitical challenges for economic developments’ organised by the Hellenic Ports Association on 2 June, Antonis had the opportunity to catch up with IAPH members from the ports of HAROPA, Heraklion, Kavala, and Tenerife – as well as prospective members from the Greek port community – and stakeholders and colleagues from CLIA, ECSA, IBIA, MedCruise, UNCTAD and the Greek Authorities. Panel discussions at the event focused on competitive ports as critical infrastructure nodes, geopolitical impacts on cruise, and the role of ports in sustainable transformation of maritime transport.
