The Panama Canal Long-term Slot Allocation (LoTSA) Programme has been expanded to include both Panamax and Neopanamax locks for the first time. Carriers will be able to bid for guaranteed transit slots during the dry season from January to April 2027. A total of 558 slots will be offered through sealed-bid auctions. The expansion follows improved rainfall and water-saving measures that allowed the canal to ease some drought restrictions. However, the Panama Canal remains concerned that a severe El Niño could again reduce transit capacity in early 2027.

Red Sea container transits hit post-crisis high as carriers accelerate return

Container traffic through the Red Sea and Suez Canal continues to recover rapidly. In September, 314 containership transits passed through the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the highest monthly level since the Houthi attacks began in late 2023 and up 64% year on year. More major carriers are returning from the Cape of Good Hope route to the shorter Suez route. The Premier Alliance (ONE, HMM and Yang Ming) has announced that two Asia-North Europe services will resume Red Sea transits in both directions. Overall, about 35% of Asia-Europe sailings are now estimated to use the Red Sea route again. The return to the Suez route is increasing effective shipping capacity, putting downward pressure on freight rates.

​The International Association of Ports & Harbors (IAPH) is delighted to announce that the 2027 edition of the World Ports Conference (#IAPH2027) – the world’s leading international conference for ports and the maritime supply chain – will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 9-11 November.

 

With the support of host sponsor and IAPH member Porto Do Açu, the conference will be held in South America for the first time in its venerable 75-year history. #IAPH2027 will convene senior port professionals from across the world in Rio – a vibrant global city framed by a lush natural landscape – for three days of high-level dialogue across the maritime supply chain, from shipowners and cargo owners, to regulators and providers of state-of-the-art technology.

 

IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven commented: “We are delighted to bring the World Ports Conference to Rio de Janeiro and to South America for the first time. This reflects the increasing importance of both the region’s thriving port sector and the sustained leadership role played by our host sponsor, Porto Do Açu, in advancing the causes of decarbonisation and digitalisation.”

 

​Host sponsor Porto do Açu is the largest deep-water and private industrial port complex in Latin America. In operation since 2014, it has 30 companies installed and 11 private terminals. The port’s future projects aim to increase agribusiness, mining and oil and gas activities, while advancing renewable energy projects and accelerating low-carbon industrialisation.

The South American debut of the World Ports Conference represents another landmark in IAPH’s deepening engagement with the South and Central American port sector, which includes the appointment of Guimara Tuñón Guerra as development director for the region, the renewal via an MoU of historic close ties with Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of the American States (OAS-CIP), the holding of a joint forum for Latin American ports in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the translation of many of IAPH’s industry-leading publications and tools into Spanish.

 

IAPH development director for Central and South America Guimara Tuñón Guerra commented: “Hosting the World Ports Conference in South America for the first time is an important milestone for IAPH and for the region. #IAPH2027 in Rio will give Latin American ports a valuable opportunity to contribute more directly to the global port agenda, share the solutions being developed across the region and build stronger partnerships around our common challenges and priorities.”

Eighteen shortlisted projects have been selected by the independent expert jury, covering the six areas of interest of the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP). The public vote to decide the winners is open and can be viewed here. These outstanding projects were chosen from a list of 66 eligible entries by an expert jury, and scored based upon the agreed evaluation criteria. ]]> Time is running out if you wish to take part in the selection of this year’s IAPH Sustainability Awards. You have until midnight on Friday 2 October to select your favourite finalists! Eighteen shortlisted projects have been selected by the independent expert jury, covering the six areas of interest of the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP). The public vote to decide the winners is open and can be viewed here. These outstanding projects were chosen from a list of 66 eligible entries by an expert jury, and scored based upon the agreed evaluation criteria. You can review the details of all the projects before submitting your choice for each category. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the jury evaluation (70%) will co-determine the winners. A seventh prize, the Akiyama Award, will go to the highest-placed IAPH Sustainability Awards submission from a Least Developed Country, or a Small Island Developing State. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony during the gala dinner of the World Ports Conference held at the iconic Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. With the tightest jury evaluation in the scheme’s history, this year the public vote will make all the difference, so cast your vote before midnight on Friday!

Held at the Delegate’s Lounge at IMO HQ on the Albert Embankment, the event was attended by professionals from across the industry shipping and ports sector as well as all IMO permanent representatives, and Chloe took the opportunity as liaison for two of IAPH’s core technical committees to connect with senior decision makers in attendance, including with Jeremy Greenwood, head of the Maritime Security Section at the IMO. The theme of World Maritime Day 2026 is ‘From Policy to Practice – Powering Maritime Excellence’, with the IMO emphasising ‘the importance of upholding and implementing the international regulatory framework that keeps shipping safe, secure and efficient, while protecting the people who work at sea’.
