The Kiribati Ports Authority (KPA) is Kiribati’s national port authority, responsible for managing the country’s principal ports and ensuring the efficient, safe, and secure movement of international cargo and vessels. KPA operates the ports of Betio (Tarawa) and Kiritimati and serves as a key facilitator of trade and economic development in Kiribati.

TC Days preliminary agenda revealed – register now!

The next IAPH Technical Committee Day will take place at the Hilton London Olympia on 2 November, the day before the 2026 IAPH World Ports Conference. This is a full day, in-person-only event, with nine technical sessions across three parallel streams, covering the hottest topics of the IAPH work program, followed by respective meetings of the three main technical committees on Climate and Energy, Data Collaboration and Risk and Resilience. The preliminary agenda has been released and IAPH members are invited to register their attendance at the technical sessions here. Topics to be addressed include IMO progress on decarbonizing shipping, nature and biodiversity in ports, climate resilience, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, port call optimization, safe handling of lithium-ion batteries, rehabilitation of port facilities and Public Private Partnerships, and sustainable cruise port accreditation. ESI and EPI to operate under IAPH umbrella

From January 2027, the Environmental Port Index (EPI) and IAPH’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will operate as complementary modules under the IAPH umbrella, thanks to an agreement signed between EPI and OceanScore, the administrator of ESI. This combination will give ports and shipowners a more coherent way to measure and reward cleaner shipping, via OceanScore’s shared and scalable technical platform. The framework is anchored in an operating agreement between EPI and OceanScore and a cooperation agreement between EPI and IAPH. The agreement brings together the two complementary approaches and creates a stronger foundation for port-based environmental incentives worldwide: ESI reflects a vessel’s overall environmental profile, while EPI uses actual operational data to measure its performance during individual port calls. Together, the two modules will give ports a broader basis for environmental incentive schemes and provide shipowners with a more consistent reporting framework.

IAPH Sustainability Awards: choose your winners!

You have until midnight on Friday 2 October to select your favourite finalists for the 2026 Sustainability Awards! Eighteen shortlisted projects have been selected by the independent expert jury, covering the six areas of interest of the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP). The public vote to decide the winners is open and can be viewed here. These outstanding projects were chosen from a list of 66 eligible entries by an expert jury, and scored based upon the agreed evaluation criteria. You can review the details of all the projects before submitting your choice for each category. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the jury evaluation (70%) will co-determine the winners. A seventh prize, the Akiyama Award, will go to the highest-placed IAPH Sustainability Awards submission from a Least Developed Country, or a Small Island Developing State. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony during the gala dinner of the World Ports Conference held at the iconic Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. IAPH president heralds paradigm shift at BIPC

IAPH president Jens Meier (CEO, Hamburg Port Authority) delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony of the 14th Busan International Port Conference (BIPC), held earlier this week. The event – with the theme of Blueprints into Action: Driving Innovation for a Resilient Future – was hosted by IAPH member the Port of Busan, which celebrated its 150th anniversary. During his opening keynote on 15 September, Jens focused on the paradigm shift from pure efficiency to resilience, underlining that ports must learn how to operate in an uncertain world rather than simply waiting for the next crisis, and emphasised that redundancy was not a luxury but the foundation of resilience. That same day, Jens also took part in an expert session and panel discussion on ‘AI Beyond Digitalisation’. Using the example of Hamburg Port Authority’s robot dog Spot, Jens explained why the real value creation of AI depends on employee acceptance and outlined the objectives HPA has set for the use of AI in infrastructure inspections. Earlier that day IAPH vice-president for North America Gene Seroka (executive director, Port of Los Angeles) and recently elected IAPH vice-president for Europe Boudewijn Siemons (CEO of Port of Rotterdam) participated in a panel discussion titled ‘The next frontier in Port Decarbonisation’ alongside pannelists from IAPH members Port of Seattle, Barcelona Port Authority and HAROPA Port.

Asian edition of World Ports Tracker presented at BIPC

The 14th BIPC conference featured a dedicated session hosted by IAPH and the Asian Development Bank, which saw the presentation of the Asian version of the IAPH World Ports Tracker 2026 report, based on a survey held among IAPH members at the beginning of this year. The Asian report was produced as a result of an MoU that IAPH and ADB signed during last year’s World Ports Conference in Kobe. The results of the Asian report were presented by one of the authors of the report, Professor Theo Notteboom (University of Antwerp), who joined the session online. Theo noted that Asia remains the world’s most connected maritime region – strengthened overall, but with disparities between leading and lagging economies widening – and that connectivity and disparities were especially critical for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and smaller economies. In some ADB regions, countries were at risk of being left ‘behind the curve’ on environmental management, risk preparedness, and decarbonisation. A presentation from Weimin Ren, director (transport division) at UNESCAP highlighted resilience as an increasing priority in regional transport connectivity. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion, moderated by IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven, with Yesim Elhan-Kayalar, advisor at the Asian Development Bank, IAPH vice-president Ichio Motono (senior executive director, Yokohama Port Corporation), Jarim Koo (vice-president global business, Busan Port Authority) and Hoe Soon Tan (assistant chief executive, Maritime & Port Authority Singapore).
