Sustainability Awards finalists revealed – vote now!

The finalists in the six areas of interest of the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) for the 2026 Sustainability Awards have been announced, and the public vote to decide the winners is open. Eighteen shortlisted projects have been selected by the independent expert jury and can be viewed here. These outstanding projects were chosen from a list of 66 eligible entries by an expert jury, and scored based upon the agreed evaluation criteria. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the jury evaluation (70%) will co-determine the winners. A seventh prize, the Akiyama Award, will go to the highest-placed IAPH Sustainability Awards finalist runner-up from a Least Developed Country, or a Small Island Developing State. You can review the details of all the projects before submitting your choice for each category. Voting will remain open until midnight CEST on Friday 2 October. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony during the gala dinner of the World Ports Conference held at the iconic Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. The jury evaluation of the shortlisted projects was very close in most categories, so this year the public vote will make all the difference. Vote now!

ISPS Code: make your voice heard with IAPH

Ahead of a discussion to be held during the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting in London later this year, IAPH has been asked by the IMO Secretariat to seek the views of its members on whether, and how, member states should amend or revise the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. In order to ensure the collective voice of the world’s ports is heard in this discussion, IAPH has created a survey, responses to which will be analysed and which will inform the development of an IAPH Information Paper for consideration at MSC. The survey comprises 18 short questions, and has an estimated completion time of 15-20 minutes. You can begin the survey here. The closing date for responses is 18 September 2026. IAPH Europe meeting held in Hamburg

IAPH members of the European region met in Hamburg this week, during SMM, one of the world’s largest maritime trade shows. The regional meeting consisted of a public session, held at the All About Ports conference – a new product of SMM – and a closed-door meeting. Both took place in the presence of IAPH president Jens Meier (Hamburg Port Authority), our newly elected vice-president for Europe Boudewijn Siemons (Port of Rotterdam) and managing director Patrick Verhoeven. The public session focused on the critical role of ports in energy supply security. Against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, changing energy markets and Europe’s drive for greater energy independence, a panel consisting of Volker Ebeling (MB Energy Holding), Ines Nastali (S&P Global), Jens Meier and Boudewijn Siemons, and chaired by Patrick Verhoeven, discussed what Europe needs from its port to ensure secure, resilient and future-ready energy supplies – and what ports need from industry and policymakers in return. The closed-door meeting featured a keynote address by Boudewijn Siemons, who outlined the priorities for his mandate as vice-president Europe, and a thought-provoking and lively session on cybersecurity, led by Jörg Steingräber and Stefan van Eijden of Hamburg Port Authority.

IAPH participated at the Tradewinds Shipowner Forum

On the occasion of SMM, IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven also joined the Tradewinds Shipowner Forum. He participated in a panel discussion on the new shipping market reality, and its implications for trade, risk and opportunity. Led by Tradewinds editor-in-chief Julian Bray, the panel further consisted of John Wessel (Oldendorff Overseas Investments), Mirjam Peters (Höegh Autoliners), Uwe Lauder (Everlience) and John Denholm (J.&J. Denholm and chairman of ICS). In the debate, Patrick emphasised that shipping and ports are not simply facing more disruption, but are operating in a more structurally volatile world, and that the winners will be those that turn resilience, adaptability and flexibility into competitive advantage.

Rebecca Moore appointed Ports & Harbors editor

IAPH is pleased to announce that Rebecca Moore has been appointed as editor of IAPH’s official bi-monthly journal, Ports & Harbors. A highly experienced maritime journalist, Rebecca most recently spent 13 years at Riviera Maritime Media as the editor of the titles Passenger Ship Technology and Container Shipping & Port Technology, and latterly as a conference producer. Ports & Harbors is produced in cooperation with IAPH’s UK-based media and events partners Mercator Media, which also produces IAPH’s annual World Ports Conference. Rebecca will also act as a media ambassador for Ports & Harbors and the World Ports Conference and provide marketing and event support for the conference and the 2026 IAPH Sustainability Awards.

IMO launches MSW survey

The IMO Secretariat has launched a survey on the implementation and use of Maritime Single Window (MSW) systems. The survey is open to all interested stakeholders with experience in the implementation, operation or use of MSW systems. The survey seeks to collect the views and experiences of all relevant stakeholders involved in the submission, processing and use of information through MSW systems, including public authorities and private-sector users. The information gathered will support the work of the organisation in identifying common challenges, good practices and opportunities to further improve the implementation and operation of MSW systems. Participants are encouraged to submit their responses by 31 October 2026. The survey can be accessed here.

IAPH connects with MBA students in Trichy

Last month, IAPH regional director for South Asia Ennarasu Karunesan visited MBA students at Hallmark Business School in Trichy, India. Ennarasu met with the potential future leaders of the industry to discuss global trade, maritime transport, global mega ports and logistics systems, and to promote IAPH’s vision of a smartly networked and resilient port world – guided by IAPH president Jens Meier’s motto, ‘Resilient by Design, Innovative by Nature.’ The visit marked Ennarasu’s return to the campus some 18 years after his previous visit, during which time Hallmark has produced some 2,000 MBA graduates. The school was founded by chairman Shri R Krishnamoorthy and stewarded by CEO and managing trustee Jayaraman Jayabalan, with the support of director Dr. Aranganathan P and Ebenezer Raja.

WEF launches 2027 cybersecurity outlook survey

The World Economic Forum has launched a Global Cybersecurity Outlook survey, the quantitative data from which will provide the foundation for the insights and analysis in its annual Global Cybersecurity Outlook report. Open until October 2, the survey is anonymous and is designed to capture expert perspectives on the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape. The target audience is C-suite executives, board members, academics and researchers, public-sector cybersecurity leaders, cybersecurity experts, operational technology (OT) security leaders, technology experts, and non-C-suite cyber leaders.
