IAPH and the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Committee on Ports renew historic close ties with MOU

Following the joint OAS-CIP – IAPH forum on port innovation and sustainability last week in Montevideo, Uruguay, the two organizations have placed renewed efforts in re-activating the memorandum of understanding signed between the two entities. The agreement, which has now entered into its twenty first year of validity, focuses on port infrastructure and human capital development with technical and joint event-based cooperation. IAPH Managing Director Patrick Verhoeven (right in picture) paid a recent courtesy visit to Jorge Durán, Secretariat Chief, Inter-American Committee on Ports (left in picture) at the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. in April to discuss further activities, including the planned OAS-CIP participation later this year at the IAPH World Ports Conference. The successful forum, which covered a wide range of tools developed by IAPH in the fields of energy transition, digitalization and resilience, will be rolled out in future joint workshops in the region. OAS – CIP, in collaboration with IAPH regional development director Guimara Tuñón Guerra, has become IAPH’s key collaborating partner in Central and South America.

#IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards – submit your entries!

IAPH members are encouraged to submit their entries for the #IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards competition, as there are less than four weeks remaining until the submission deadline. Member ports – and associate members acting on their behalf – should submit their sustainability projects using the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) dedicated online form by 10 June. You can submit your project here. Projects will then be evaluated and scored by an independent jury against the evaluation criteria and will be highlighted on IAPH’s social media channels and on the WPSP website. Finalists in the six categories will be announced in August and the public will vote for their favourites online on the WPSP website. The most inspiring projects in each of the six Awards categories will be showcased during a prestigious dedicated ceremony to take place at the gala dinner of the #IAPH2026 World Ports Conference at the Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. Members will find all information related to the 2026 Awards in this year’s terms of reference. IAPH and OAS-CIP bring workshop to Montevideo

The first IAPH-OAS-CIP joint forum for Latin American ports, hosted by Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP) of Uruguay in Montevideo was held earlier this week. A day and a half of intense workshops and interchange of ideas took place from 11-12 May, featuring tools and best practices around the topics of climate and energy, risk and resilience and data collaboration. A delegation led by IAPH regional VP for Central and South America Vinicius Patel and regional IAPH representative Guimara Tuñón Guerra included IAPH’s Antonis Michail and Victor Shieh, and Data Collaboration Committee Chair Ingrid Boqué Sastre of Port de Barcelona, as well as Caio Cunha of Porto do Açu, who interacted with IAPH members from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Peru. The ‘trunk show’ forum, which focused on showcasing IAPH’s tools and initiatives around sustainability and port innovation, was conducted entirely in Spanish. The event was organised by Sabina Malnis with Viviana Techera of the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of the American States (OAS), alongside ANP.

PCO guide now available in Spanish

Coinciding with the IAPH-OAS-CIP regional forum this week in Montevideo, IAPH published a full translation of the recently released Port Call Optimization (PCO) Guide. Presented during the latest IMO Facilitation Committee (FAL 50) in London in March by lead author Captain Ben Van Scherpenzeel of the International Harbour Masters Association, with the support of IAPH and 39 other organizations, the PCO Guide was translated by Sabina Malnis of OAS-CIP and edited by IAPH regional representative for Central and South America Guimara Tuñón Guerra of the Maritime Policy Bureau. The recommendations for a step-by-step implementation of PCO – in terms of data harmonisation and managing stakeholders – were one of the main topics discussed during a session with IAPH members moderated by Data Collaboration Committee chair Ingrid Boqué at the forum in Uruguay. Jens reflects on collaborative efforts at ESPO conference

IAPH president Jens Meier and managing director Patrick Verhoeven attended the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) Conference earlier this month. Held in Gdansk, 7-8 May under the theme of ‘Competitiveness as driver of resilience’, the conference included a ‘’port executive lounge’ session at which Jens spoke, featuring senior port executives reflections on presentations given earlier on the first day of the conference, covering macro-economic, energy and geopolitical outlook. Alongside representatives from the ports of Barcelona, HAROPA and Rotterdam, Jens highlighted the importance of cooperation between ports to build resilience. He also emphasised the role of organisations like IAPH and ESPO to bring together knowledge and expertise from leading port professionals.

Cyber guidelines and security measures on MSC agenda

IAPH will attend the 111th meeting of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 111) 13-22nd May 2026. At this session, IAPH will have the opportunity to introduce the latest IAPH Cyber Resilience Guidelines for Emerging Technologies. Following agreement at the IMO Facilitation Committee (FAL 50) in March to take note of and disseminate the guidelines, MSC will also be invited to take note of IAPH’s submission and include a reference to its guidelines under section 4.3 of the IMO Guidelines on maritime cyber risk management (MSC-FAL.1/Circ.3/Rev.3). Also on the agenda is a proposal by the USA on measures to enhance maritime security. Specifically, this proposal urges Member States and the IMO to consider developing additional maritime security measures within existing IMO instruments, namely the ISPS Code, to better address evolving security threats. Given the recent discussions at the IAPH Technical Committee Days in Singapore on the ISPS Code, IAPH will be following this discussion closely to assess the appetite among Member States on the willingness to make such amendments. A full report on the outcomes will be disseminated to members in due course.

Ports invited to join Data Exchange Working Group

During the IAPH Technical Committee Days in Singapore, the formation of a Data Exchange Working Group under the Data Collaboration Committee was officially announced. Ports that are ready to begin port-to-port data exchange are invited to join the working group, led by Jan-Willem den Ouden (Port of Rotterdam) and Ingrid Boqué (Port of Barcelona and DCC chair). During the workshop session in Singapore, members conducted a deep dive into defining the business value cases for Port Call Optimization (PCO), covering both port-to-port and ship-to-shore data exchange. Ports are invited to join the working group in order to continue scaling PCO implementation. The Technical Committee is leading the effort to establish port pairs that are ready to start exchanging this data. Participation requires not only the necessary resources and digital maturity at each port, but also the identification of a partner port within three days’ sailing time with which to exchange data. The upcoming meeting will be held online on May 27th, with two time slots available: 09:00 and 17:00 CEST. Ports that meet the requirements and are willing to join the working group are kindly invited to contact IAPH senior manager: Data Collaboration, Risk & Resilience Chloe Rowland.
