IAPH World Ports Tracker 2026 available now

The survey results of IAPH’s most-engaged ports have been analysed in the latest version of the IAPH World Ports Tracker 2026 – Sustainability and Market Trends, written by Professors Theo Notteboom and Thanos Pallis of the IAPH Risk and Resilience technical committee. This work builds on the comprehensive upgrade of the World Ports Tracker undertaken in 2025, allowing insightful comparative analysis between the two editions.

Together, the responding ports from IAPH’s membership handle more than 8.6 billion tons of maritime cargo and 372 million TEU. They were questioned on the six areas of interest of the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) and on their views on market prospects. The report further gathers additional data on container port productivity and liner connectivity from UNCTAD/MDS and S&P Global.

The IAPH World Ports Tracker 2026 is available exclusively to IAPH members via the Member Area of the IAPH site (Risk & Resilience Committee page under the Technical Committees menu). Non-members can access a paid edition of the report.

IAPH and CLIA strengthen ties at Seatrade Cruise Global

IAPH was present at this year’s edition of Seatrade Cruise Global, the world’s leading event for the maritime cruise sector, which takes place annually in Miami. President Jens Meier, chair of the IAPH Cruise Committee Simone Maraschi and managing director Patrick Verhoeven participated in various sessions, underlining the memorandum of understanding that IAPH signed with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) at last year’s World Ports Conference in Kobe. Jens joined CLIA president and CEO Bud Darr in a fireside chat yesterday. They discussed how ports and cruise lines can work together to advance sustainability, strengthen infrastructure planning, and support resilient, high-value cruise destinations worldwide. On Monday, Patrick provided opening remarks during an exclusive preview of CLIA’s Cruise Port Compass: a comprehensive, expert-led master class series and development guide designed to help ports and destinations strengthen performance, attract deployment, and prepare for long-term growth. Patrick used the occasion to update the audience on IAPH’s initiative to develop a certification scheme for sustainable cruise ports. This scheme is based on the six thematic areas of the World Ports Sustainability Program and introduces tiered requirements per sustainability theme. The initial concept is ready for peer review, which will start at the IAPH Technical Committee Days in Singapore next week. The aim is to have the final concept presented at this year’s World Ports Conference and to launch the certification scheme at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami next year.

IAPH connects with port partners in New York and D.C.

Prior to attending Seatrade, Patrick visited New York and Washington, D.C. In New York, he met with the Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey, the primary advocate for the commercial maritime industry in the port, which also performs as a trade association representing its members. Patrick also participated in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey bi-annual Sustainability Summit. At this event, the port authority handed out awards to shipping companies participating in its Clean Vessel Incentive Program, which uses IAPH’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI) as its basis. In Washington, Patrick renewed ties with the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organisation of American States (OAS-CIP). OAS-CIP and IAPH have a long-standing memorandum of understanding, which is being given new impetus this year, with a regional forum for IAPH members from Central and South America, organised in Montevideo, Uruguay, 11–12 May. Patrick also caught up with the transport and trade teams of the World Bank, an associate member and long-standing partner of IAPH.

Registration is now open for the third in this year’s series of #IAPH2026 webinars, counting down to the IAPH World Port Conference in London this November. On Wednesday 6 May (17.00 CEST / 08.00 PDT) join IAPH technical director Antonis Michail as he tackles the topic of underwater radiated noise (URN) with an expert panel. Antonis will be joined by Cheryl Ng, ECHO program specialist – collaborative initiatives at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Rachel Aronson, program director for Quiet Sound and Eduardo Ramos, senior data analyst at OceanScore. URN generated by commercial shipping can have short-term and long-term negative effects on marine life, especially marine mammals. Yet, there is still little understanding of how responsible operational practices and initiatives by vessels and ports can reduce the serious impact of URN. The session will reveal the latest strategies and technologies for mitigating URN and its effects. The panel will unpack ongoing regulatory discussions of URN at the IMO and explore the recently launched URN module within IAPH’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which can be used by ports and ships to ‘turn down the volume’ on this critical shipping output. IAPH to co-host regional forum in Montevideo

IAPH has teamed up with OAS-CIP (Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of American States) and IAPH member the National Ports Administration of Uruguay in Montevideo to organise a regional forum on port sustainability and innovation, held 11–12 May. There are planned workshops on all major IAPH products developed by the technical committees as well as a session of Port Endeavor gameplay, all of which will be conducted in Spanish. The forum rekindles the MoU and working relationship between OAS-CIP and IAPH, which builds on the series of webinars held previously. This invitation-only event is being coordinated by OAS-CIP’s program manager Sabina Malnis and IAPH regional representative for Central and South America, Guimara Tuñón Guerra. IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven visited the OAS-CIP secretariat chief Jorge Duran in Washington last week to discuss the forum as well as further plans for collaboration.

IAPH attends first edition of SIPORTS

IAPH membership outreach and networks director Victor Shieh attended the first ever SIPORTS 2026 conference and exhibition in El Jadida, Morocco, 1–3 April. The event brought together Moroccan port authorities, Marsa Maroc (the main operator of ports in the country) and the wider maritime community, including several IAPH African member ports as well as the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA). Victor took part as panellist at a session on the green transition of ports and highlighted trends using World Ports Sustainability Program best practices, which included audiovisual showcases of the 2025 Sustainability Awards finalists in four of the categories. Joining him were senior representatives from the IMO, PortNet, the Moroccan National Port Agency (NPA), Dr Loubna Terhzaz of Mohammed V University in Rabat as well as Wabtec and Igus Maroc.
