IAPH Europe to meet in Hamburg on 2 September

Members wishing to meet our new vice-president for Europe in person will have a first-hand opportunity during this year’s IAPH Europe regional meeting, which will be held in Hamburg during the afternoon of 2 September. Following an initiative of our president Jens Meier, the meeting will explore the theme ‘Powering Europe’s Future: The Critical Role of Ports in Energy Supply Security’. The regional meeting will be part of the ALL ABOUT PORTS conference, which is held alongside SMM, one of the world’s leading maritime trade fairs. The programme features a panel discussion with Jens Meier, Boudewijn Siemons and Volker Ebeling, who is the senior vice-president New Energy, Supply and Infrastructure at MB Energy. The session will be moderated by IAPH’s managing director Patrick Verhoeven and takes place on the Energy & Sustainability Stage of the ALL ABOUT PORTS conference. The panel debate is followed by an exclusive breakout session for IAPH members, during which Boudewijn will discuss his priorities for the region and Jens will lead a discussion on the growing cyber risk landscape for ports and the maritime sector. IAPH-KMI Port Forum to focus on transformation

As the global maritime sector adapts to rapid economic and technological shifts, the IAPH-KMI Port Forum 2026 will explore the major challenges and opportunities shaping the future of ports. Taking place on 27 July from 10:30 JST at Hotel Azur Takeshiba in Tokyo, the forum will be organized by IAPH, Korea Maritime Institute, and the Japanese Foundation for IAPH. The agenda features keynote presentations and three thematic sessions. The keynote presentations will highlight global trends in port sustainability and provide perspectives on maritime trade in an increasingly uncertain environment. The first session will focus on decarbonisation, featuring Japan’s Carbon Neutral Port initiative, a new power grid across the ocean, and eco-friendly marine fuels. The second session will focus on digitalisation, with presentations on AI-container terminals, digital smart port strategy, and smart port transformation. Karrie Trauth to deliver #IAPH2026 keynote address

Karrie Trauth, president of the UK Chamber of Shipping, will deliver the opening keynote address during the IAPH World Ports Conference in London this November. On 3 November at the Arcadia Auditorium at Olympia, Karrie – who was appointed to her role in March – will give her view on the role of shipping and ports in a rapidly changing global economy. Karrie will bring the invaluable perspective of three decades in the shipping industry; you can read about her diverse career here, from her beginnings as a surface warfare officer in the US Navy (serving as one of the first group of women assigned in combat ships) to her present role as executive vice president of shipping & maritime at Shell. Preliminary Technical Committee agenda available

The next in-person gathering of all IAPH Technical Committees and experts, under the usual Technical Committee (TC) Day format, will take place in London on 2 November, just prior to the World Ports Conference. A full day of technical sessions, running in three parallel streams, will allow members to further define and progress the IAPH work programme in the fields of decarbonisation, digitalisation, resilience, but also environment, sustainable cruise and sustainable infrastructure. The 2 November TC Day will conclude with in-person meetings of the three main IAPH Technical Committees. The preliminary TC Day agenda, available here, was circulated to members this week and will be followed by a full annotated agenda and the online registration form in September. Please note that TC Day attendance will be in-person only, so timely travel arrangements will be necessary if you wish to attend. We are looking forward to welcoming all our members in London for both the TC Day on 2 November and #IAPH2026 on 3-6 November. Ports Technology Mentorship deadline approaches

Applications for the IAPH Ports Technology Mentorship Scheme will close on August 7. IAPH is seeking six emerging or newly appointed technology leaders from IAPH member ports who will benefit from mentorship, alongside six well-established or experienced CIOs, CISOs or CDOs who will act as mentors for the scheme. The programme, which kicks off in September, will be implemented and managed by Nicola Good, director of 8th Street Communications, and will involve a combination of in-person events, online sessions and one-to-one engagement. The creation of the mentoring programme is part of IAPH president Jens Meier’s determination to drive digitalisation, sustainability, resilience and skills development within the association. The IAPH Ports Technology Mentorship programme is open to all eligible professionals from IAPH member ports. Expert jury begins evaluating Sustainability Awards entries

With this year’s project submissions for the IAPH Sustainability Awards, the World Port Sustainability Program (WPSP) database is nearing a total 600 projects from more than 200 ports around the world. The quality of this year’s entries is very high, both in terms of presentation and innovative, original content and IAPH again extends its thanks to those members submitting projects for creating a strong level of competition in all six awards categories. This week, the expert jury (about whom you can discover more information here) began its assessment of all candidate projects, a challenging task that involves identifying the top three entries per category; these will be announced by the end of August. The 18 emerging finalists will be subject to a public vote to be launched on the WPSP website thereafter, the outcomes of which will co-determine (weighted at 30%) the final winners. The 2026 prestigious awards ceremony will take place at the iconic Natural History Museum of London, during the Gala Dinner of the World Ports Conference on the 4th of November.
