Fernanda Sossai appointed as new vice chair of C&E

Following nomination and approval from the IAPH board, Fernanda Sossai of Porto do Açu was appointed vice chair of the IAPH Climate and Energy technical committee. Fernanda steps into the place of the newly appointed chair of the same committee, Port of Gotherburg’s Edvard Molitor. Fernanda heads up port development and ESG at the Port of Açu in Brazil and has been involved in many of the projects submitted by the port to the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program, several of which have been either winners or runners up in several categories in recent years. An environmental engineer by academic background, Fernanda has also specialised in work safety and process engineering at various universities in Brazil and has worked in several Brazilian energy companies before joining the port as the head of HSE. You will be able to learn more about Fernanda’s perspectives on port sustainability in a new interview with her, featured in the forthcoming January – February issue of Ports & Harbors magazine.

IAPH website gets an upgrade

Following the collective efforts of the IAPH team, the IAPH website (iaphworldports.org) has been updated and upgraded for both members and public users. The public area has been revamped with comprehensive sections for Climate and Energy, Data Collaboration and Risk and Resilience, which contain reports and topics arranged by categories. Our regular members are described in detail by region on the members section, with hyperlinks to the websites of all our associate members, also by region. There is a special communications section containing all publications and social media links, a consolidated news section and a new section containing information about joining IAPH. The newly organised members area has separate sections for all committees, which contain meeting and working group activities and documentation in date order going back to 2020, with additional upcoming meeting notices. There are also proceedings and past presentations from previous IAPH World Ports Conferences, Sustainability Award project winners going back to 2019, and access to the comprehensive, revamped online membership directory, for members to get in touch with their industry colleagues. Members can also track back to all recently-published Ports & Harbors editions and there is a reference listing of past and present IAPH Insider newsletters. Countdown to #IAPH2025: 1965 milestone in London

Three organisational factors make IAPH an effective representational body for world ports: its standing as a recognised NGO, its consultative status with crucial international organisations, and the fact that it operates on a truly global basis. In the association’s infancy, each of these features represented a long-term institutional goal, and all three milestones were reached around the time of the organisation’s 10th anniversary – marked by the Fourth Conference of the IAPH, which took place in London, May 10–14, 1965. Held at the Café Royal on Regent Street (today the Hotel Café Royal), the event was chaired by Viscount Simon of the Port of London Authority with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh as its patron, and saw double the attendees of the previous conference. The growth around the London event mirrored the organisation’s rapid membership expansion, particularly with regard to European ports; until this point, “Europe had been a hard nut to crack for IAPH”, remembered secretary general Gaku Matsumoto. Discussions at the conference emphasized cooperation with global organizations like the UN, World Bank, and OECD, to aid developing countries. Indeed, following earlier meetings with the secretariat, J N Bathurst, a representative of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), spoke at the conference and outlined the procedures for establishing a relationship between the association and UN ECOSOC. The next year, IAPH was granted Category B non-governmental advisory status by the UN and went on to acquire consultative status with organizations such as UNCTAD and the IMO. In recent years, London has increased in importance for the association. It is the home not only of the IMO but also of the IAPH Europe team, with a shared office space at the Park Street headquarters of the British Ports Association; it has also become the venue for the annual in-person Technical Committee days. These developments represent the continuation of a proud legacy of international engagement; as Matsumoto later observed, “it is not too much at all to say that IAPH became a world organization only by dint of the London conference.”

The latest scores of the IAPH Environmental Ship Index (ESI) were published by the scheme administrator Green Award Foundation on 1 January. The number of vessels with an ESI score of 20 or above is at 4,859, whereas the total number of vessels in the ESI database is at 6,505. The average ESI score is 31.9.
