We are pleased to announce that Deendayal Port Authority has joined the IAPH as a regular member.

Deendayal Port Authority, formerly known as Kandla Port, is one of India’s major ports located on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat on the country’s northwest coast. It operates under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and serves as a key gateway for trade, particularly for northern and western India.

The port handles a wide range of cargo, including bulk, liquid, and containers. It plays a vital role in international trade, with strong connectivity to inland regions and major global markets, including the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

#IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards: deadline approaching

The submission deadline for the #IAPH2026 Sustainability Awards competition is approaching fast! Member ports – and associate members acting on their behalf – should submit their sustainability projects using the World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) dedicated online form by 10 June. You can submit your project here. Projects will then be evaluated and scored by an independent jury against the evaluation criteria and will be highlighted on IAPH’s social media channels and on the WPSP website. Finalists in the six categories will be announced in August and the public will vote for their favourites online on the WPSP website. The most inspiring projects in each of the six Awards categories will be showcased during a prestigious dedicated ceremony to take place at the gala dinner of the #IAPH2026 World Ports Conference at the Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. Members will find all information related to the 2026 Awards in this year’s terms of reference. IAPH president delivers remarks at Ningbo forum opening

IAPH president Jens Meier (CEO, Hamburg Port Authority) is attending the Maritime Silk Road Port Cooperation Forum (MPF) held 26-28 May in Ningbo, China. Jens was invited to deliver the main remarks during the opening ceremony of the Main Forum, scheduled for the morning of 27 May at Zhi Xing Hall of the Ningbo International Conference Center. In his remarks he emphasised that constant change was ‘the new normal’ for the sector and that no port, shipping company or country could manage transformation in isolation; he therefore called for fewer declarations and more action. He further emphasised that the theme of the IAPH World Ports Conference 2026 was ‘Port leadership for a brave new world’ – a sentiment that reflected a commitment to action. In closing, Jens expressed a wish to see many Chinese ports at the event. Prior to delivering his remarks, Jens attended the Multilateral Partnership Ports Conference as well as the CEO High-Level Roundtable Meeting on May 26.

CMF and PRL joint working groups held in Marseille

The IAPH working groups on Clean Marine Fuels (CMF) and Port Readiness Levels (PRL) met in Marseille on 18-20 May. Hosted by the Port of Marseille-Fos, 20 experts from the ports of Açu, Antwerp-Bruges, Amsterdam, Barcelona, HAROPA, Marseille-Fos, North Sea Port, Rotterdam and Seattle, as well as Transport Canada, the International Chamber of Shipping and Ernst & Young, gathered to advance the working groups’ agendas on preparing world ports for bunkering and transporting low- and zero-carbon fuels safely and efficiently. The meetings took place back-to-back with the MEDports Forum 2026 (20-21 May), allowing for synergies and exchange between CMF/PRL and the Mediterranean ports. These were the final meetings attended by Cees Boon, sector coordinator at the harbourmaster policy department of the Port of Rotterdam; Cees’ contribution has been instrumental to the development of the CMF and PRL tools. The working group members and IAPH staff thanked Cees for his hard work and commitment, and IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven offered Cees a miniature replica of ‘The Docker’ – a sculpture by the 19th century Belgian artist Constantin Meunier – as a token of appreciation.

IAPH brings clean fuel focus to MEDPorts

The MEDPorts 2026 Forum took place at the Port of Marseille-Fos, 20-21 May, focusing on the theme of ‘Resilient logistics and green corridors’. IAPH technical director Antonis Michail joined Hervé Martel, CEO and chairman of the executive board at Marseille Fos Port Authority, and David Magro, president of the MEDPorts Association, in opening the forum and welcoming the participants. IAPH members and CMF/PRL contributors, Françoise van den Brink (Port of Rotterdam), Daniel Ruiz (Port of Barcelona) and Sarah Ogier (Port of Seattle) participated in dedicated panel discussions on clean fuels and green corridors, offering their ports’ perspectives and highlighting links with IAPH’s work on clean marine fuels readiness. The day before the forum began, an evening event hosted by the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille was held at the Marseille business club Le 29. Themed around ‘Geopolitics of Strategic Flows and Corridors: Challenges for the Mediterranean and International Trade,’ the event included an informal ‘fireside chat’ between IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven and Margi Van Gogh, head, Supply Chain and Transportation Industry at the World Economic Forum. They discussed the ways in which ports are demonstrating their agility and capacity for innovation by accelerating their decarbonisation and digitalisation processes.

Decarbonisation discussion with IAPH member Sines

Against the backdrop of TOC Europe, held 19-21 May in Hamburg, IAPH president and Hamburg Port Authority CEO Jens Meier met with Jaime Puna, executive member of the Board at IAPH regular member Port of Sines. A key topic in Jens and Jaime’s strategic discussion was the development of the Sustainable Energy Hub in the Port of Hamburg, which served as an example of the evolving role of ports in future energy supply chains. The executives also exchanged views on renewable energy production, the goals and strategies being pursued by their respective ports, and the expansion of shore power facilities and the expected rise in demand from container and cruise vessels from 2030 onward.

IAPH SG presents at Asia Pacific Transport Forum

IAPH secretary general Masahiko Furuichi spoke at the Asia and the Pacific Transport Forum (APTF) earlier this month in Manila. The event, held 19-22 May, was organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB); convened biennially since 2008, the forum brings together ministers, senior officials, transport practitioners, and development partners to examine shared challenges, exchange experience, and explore solutions based on real-world delivery across the region. Masahiko delivered a lecture on ‘Sustainable and resilient port priorities by 2026 IAPH World Ports Tracker’ in the parallel session ‘Operationalizing sustainable and resilient maritime systems’. Masahiko focused on the port priorities revealed by the 2026 IAPH World Ports Tracker survey. He also met with Hideaki Iwasaki, the director general Sectors Development 1 at ADB (pictured). The collaboration between the two organizations is increasing, based on the MOU signed by the IAPH and the ADB at the 2025 IAPH World Ports Conference in Kobe.

IAPH reconnects with Philippine Ports Authority

While in Manila for the Asia Pacific Transport Forum, IAPH secretary general Masahiko Furuichi visited the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), a long-standing regular member of the Association since 1965. This was the first IAPH visit to PPA since the Covid pandemic. Masahiko met with Mark Jon S. Paloma, the PPA’s assistant general manager for operations. He proposed to hold the coming Japan-Philippines Port Seminar in October, focusing on the priority agendas for both island countries such as hinterland connectivity, inter-island connectivity, and efficiency through digital innovation. Mark Jon agreed that the seminar could be hosted at the PPA and expressed his hope for fruitful discussions and information sharing between the two countries.
