Ports Victoria is a Victorian Government statutory authority responsible for maritime navigation, vessel traffic management, and operational safety across Victoria’s commercial ports and waterways. IAPH Board meets ahead of IMO SG discussion

IAPH Board members met in London on Monday for their second quarterly meeting of the year. IAPH president Jens Meier and board members Abubakar Dantsoho (VP for Africa), Marika Calfas (VP for Southeast Asia and Oceania) and Ichio Motono (VP for Asia, South/West, East & Middle East) participated in person. Board members Vinicius Patel (VP for America, Central & South) and Gene Seroka (VP for America, North) attended remotely. Managing director Patrick Verhoeven and secretary-general Masahiko Furuichi provided the Board with the quarterly management report, covering the financial situation, membership development, the new management framework of the Environmental Ship Index, implementation of the 2026 work programme, the World Ports Sustainability Program as well as upcoming events, including the World Ports Conference. Board members appointed Peter Van Parys (North Sea Port) and Fabian Steinmann (Cranfield University) as chair and vice chair of the Risk and Resilience Committee. Peter Van Parys will officially take over from the incumbent chair, Niels Vanlaer (Port of Antwerp-Bruges) in November. Prior to the meeting, the Board had an exchange of views with IMO secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez on progress with the IMO Net Zero Framework, the review of the ISPS Code, and the implementation in ports of the recently adopted Code on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS Code). The day was concluded with a convivial dinner with the new chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping, John Denholm, and ICS’s secretary-general Thomas Kazakos and chief of staff Laura Worley.

Ports find themselves in a rapidly realigning world and sessions at the IAPH World Ports Conference will shine a light on the key strategic concerns for the industry. On 4 November 2026, a plenary session will see industry leaders reflecting recent developments at the IMO, and examining the commercial implications and potential infrastructure requirements. ‘The IMO Net Zero Framework and the future of global regulation of maritime carbon emissions’ will see moderator Declan Bush (senior reporter, Lloyd’s List) explore the topic with Roel Hoenders (head of Climate Action and Clean Air, Marine Environment Division, IMO) and Thomas Kazakos (secretary general, International Chamber of Shipping). On 5 November, a plenary session will explore the implications of dual-use infrastructure for port planning and operations. Moderated by Sue Terpilowski OBE (managing director, Image Line Communications), ‘Military logistics and the dual use of commercial ports’ will see panellists Charlotte Kleberg (Board & Advisory, Soya Group), James Stride (chief harbour master, Port of London Authority) and Dmytro Barinov (president, Ukrainian Ports Association – UKRPort) discuss the largely unforeseen and increasingly important role played by commercial ports in military mobility and strategic logistics, as geopolitical conflicts increase around the world. IAPH European team meets and networks in London

This week, IAPH colleagues based in Antwerp, Brussels, London, Plymouth and Athens convened at IAPH’s Park Street, London offices, shared with the British Ports Association, to review strategic priorities for 2026. Held 8 July, the meeting focused on projects and deliverables under the key thematic areas of IAPH’s committees. Among the issues discussed were the Environmental Ship Index, ongoing advocacy at the IMO, publications and products, and the IAPH World Ports Conference in London, 3-6 November. In the evening, the team attended a Summer Networking Event run by the Seahorse Freight Association – a not-for-profit organisation bringing the supply chain, logistics, and transport industry together with sector media, public relations and marketing professionals. The event, held at The Anchor Bankside pub, was sponsored by IAPH, and team members networked with maritime media contacts, raising awareness of #IAP2026 in London.

Harbor Café podcast highlights ammonia-powered carrier

In the latest edition of the IAPH Harbor Café Podcast, deputy COO of EXMAR Ariane Saverys speaks with IAPH’s Victor Shieh about the maiden voyage of their latest seventh-generation of mid-size gas carriers, which have carried LPG and ammonia for decades. The first newbuild vessel, Antwerpen, is seaborne and scheduled to carry its first cargo of low-carbon ammonia out of China, with a difference: the vessel is being propelled by the ammonia, an industry first for the liquid bulk segment. Ariane tells the tale of how the vessel was built and discusses what this could mean for shipping and ports in terms of future fuels. You can listen on SoundCloud or Spotify channels.

IAPH-World Bank PCS report available in Spanish

In collaboration with OAS-CIP, IAPH has developed a Spanish version of the IAPH-World Bank Port Community Systems Report which is now available for download. It contains practical guidelines on implementation, with case studies from developing and developed countries. You can get your copy here. This adds to the Spanish versions developed for the WCO-IAPH Guidelines for Cooperation between Customs and Port Authorities, IAPH Cyber Resilience Guidelines for Emerging Technologies, and the Port Call Optimisation (PCO) Guide. These can all be found on the products page of the IAPH website.

IAPH participates at ICSI and NATO discussions

IAPH’s senior manager for Data Collaboration, Risk & Resilience Chloe Rowland recently attended events in London relating to the activities of both the Data Collaboration and Risk & Resilience Technical Committees. Appropriately scheduled during London Climate Action Week and amid a heatwave, a roundtable discussion session hosted by the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) focused on unlocking finance for climate resilient port infrastructure projects. Chloe made a statement on behalf of IAPH member ports outlining their experiences in undertaking infrastructure projects related to climate change and climate resilience. Chloe also attended the annual NATO Maritime Command Cyber Conference at their Headquarters in Northwood which included discussions on subjects such as quantum computing, AI, drones and subsea cable data security.

C&E Steering Group discusses nuclear propulsion

The IAPH Steering Group on Climate and Energy met virtually on 2 July to hold a first IAPH technical discussion on developments regarding nuclear energy propulsion of commercial vessels and implications for ports. While the IAPH working groups on Clean Marine Fuels and Port Readiness Levels were identified as the right fora for considering technical work in the field, it was considered important for IAPH to establish a mechanism to get early identification of relevant developments in the shipping industry through sharing of insights and through closer involvement in the respective IMO work. Elsewhere on its agenda, the Steering Group discussed forthcoming work on nature and biodiversity in ports and the relevant C&E content of the Technical Committee Day in London, 2 November.
