IAPH Sustainability Awards voting is open

IAPH is delighted to announce that voting by the general public has opened for the #IAPH2024 Sustainability Awards, with votes being collected online via the World Ports Sustainability Program website. These outstanding projects have been chosen by an expert jury from a long list of 71 projects submitted by over 50 ports around the world, all of which have now been added to the publicly available projects database. In order to take part in the public vote, people have the chance to review the details of all the projects before submitting their choice for each category. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the Jury evaluation (70%) will co-determine the winners of the Awards. The voting will remain open until midnight Central European Summer Time (CEST) on 13 September. A seventh prize, the Akiyama Award, will go to the highest-placed IAPH Sustainability Awards finalist runner-up from a Least Developed Country, a Landlocked Developing Country or a Small Island Developing State. The winners will be announced in person at the upcoming IAPH 2024 World Ports Conference at the prestigious Gala Dinner to be held on 9 October in Hamburg, Germany. The process is operated on a ‘one person, one vote’ basis visit. You can make your selection here or use the QR code pictured below.

Preventing cyber-attacks with #IAPH2024 webinars

As the 2024 World Ports Conference draws closer, IAPH will stimulate debate around a major conference topic, with webinars on 10 September and 11 September that explore the topic of ‘preparing for the inevitable – how ports can prepare themselves against cyber-attacks’. Following successful #IAPH2024 webinars held in June that focused on sourcing electricity for ports, these two ninety-minute interactive sessions will feature port cybersecurity experts from IAPH members, leading-edge technology advisors and providers all exploring how ports can identify gaps in their defences. This includes the perspective from the ship-shore interface, best practices shared from other sectors, and the kind of crisis-management support offered if an attack takes place. Attendees will also get an update from IAPH on the latest IMO regulatory developments in cyber-security management. Attendees can register for sessions either on Tuesday 10 September or Wednesday 11 September. Two in-person cybersecurity workshops, organised in partnership with the University of Plymouth, are planned for the World Ports Conference, with limited places on offer to registered attendees.

Limited spaces for Port Endeavor at #IAPH2024

IAPH’s Port Endeavor business game has captured the imagination of more than 1,600 port executives around the world since its launch in 2021. Port Endeavor is an exciting and engaging business game that educates port professionals on sustainability and the application of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the ports industry. It was invented by IAPH and co-developed as a triple venture with UNCTAD TrainForTrade, and APEC, the training arm of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International. Participants assume the role of a port executive in a fictional environment and collaborate with their team to create the most sustainable port. To reach their goals, participants will have to make smart choices and implement as many of the UN SDGs as they can. This year, a selected number of participants at the World Ports Conference in Hamburg will get the chance to experience the game themselves, with prizes for the winning teams. Two games will be held concurrently on 9 October, but spaces are extremely limited. Time is running out to book your spot for this exciting and enjoyable game in Hamburg, so register now to secure your spot!

Patrick takes a Portside Perspective

IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven was the guest on the latest episode of the Portside Perspective podcast, where he spoke with presenter Anne-Marie Causer about key issues at the top of IAPH member ports’ agendas, including resilience, decarbonisation and the digital revolution. With #IAPH2024 also imminent, he explained what the audience could expect from the conference agenda and why it’s a must-attend event in the port industry calendar. Portside Perspective – a podcast from Port Strategy and GreenPort – invites representatives from the port community to discuss the latest opportunities in sustainability, port developments and the challenges of port operations. Readers can hear Patrick’s interview here.

chainPORT and IKEA Supply AG join The Loadstar podcast

This week, the leading supply chain news portal The Loadstar published its regular podcast, which has an average reach of more than 8,000 global listeners mainly comprising shippers and forwarders. In this edition, Ingrid Boque (chainPORT project management office head and global strategic networks officer) and Stefan Krattiger (business development leader of global ports of Ikea AG’s Supply Chain Operations) joined moderator Mike King for the second half of the podcast. Stefan explains why Ikea Supply AG, as an IAPH associate member, has been collaborating closely with port authorities on supply chain visibility and sustainability. Meanwhile, Ingrid explains the work being carried out by the chainPORT network of leading world ports, together under the auspices of the Supply Chain Resilience Taskforce led by IAPH, alongside TIC 4.0 (terminal operators) DCSA (main container carriers) and IPCSA (the port community systems association). You can listen to their contributions to the podcast, by clicking here – Ingrid and Stefan speak between minutes 23 and 43. The Loadstar’s managing editor Gavin van Marle will be covering the IAPH World Ports Conference in person. WCO – IAPH guidelines now in Spanish

The World Customs Organisation (WCO) and the IAPH are delighted to announce that the Guidelines on Cooperation between Customs and Port Authorities are now available in Spanish, thanks to the collaboration with SUNAT (Peruvian Customs). The guidelines aim to strengthen cooperation between customs and port authorities, facilitating trade, enhancing security, and improving operational efficiency. The Spanish version is a crucial resource for Spanish-speaking professionals in the field. Readers can download the Spanish version here and the English version here. WCO and IAPH plan to further promote the guidelines together during Q4; WCO project manager David Zaine will be taking part in the #IAPH2024 Conference session focused on combatting and preventing illicit trade in ports, on 8 October.

IAPH CEOs at Hamburg Sustainability Conference

On October 7, the day before the IAPH 2024 World Ports Conference, the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) will be held at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. This invitation-only event is being organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and the Michael Otto Foundation. It will bring together heads of state, government officials, and decision-makers from international institutions, the private sector, civil society, and academia. Invitations have been sent to CEOs of IAPH member ports who are also invited to attend the session on Green Shipping, scheduled 15:00-17:00 on October 7th. This high-level panel will include the IMO secretary general Arsenio Dominguez, the IAPH president and Hamburg Port Authority CEO Jens Meier, the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as other senior representatives from the international maritime sector. Two agreement signings are planned: a government-level declaration and the ‘Hamburg Declaration,’ which aims to expand Green Shipping Corridors, involve additional supply chain stakeholders and ensure necessary support for successful implementations. The full program can be found here. We kindly ask IAPH regular port member CEOs to check their email for invitations sent in August, including their spam folders. If you have not received an invitation, please contact Ingrid Boqué at Hamburg Port Authority. For further information, please check the conference website.

The global ports outlook from Kristiansand

IAPH policy and IMO liaison officer Rhona Macdonald presented at the Global Ports Conference in Kristiansand, Norway on 22nd August as part of the Global Outlook session. This session examined the role of ports in the face in ensuring supply chain fluidity while balancing geopolitical challenges and investment needs. Rhona’s presentation focused particularly on the dual role of ports as businesses and as critical infrastructure for supply and security, with a particular focus on energy and digital infrastructure needs. The conference was a great opportunity to meet with port professionals and other maritime experts from across the Norwegian ports sector. Conference attendees heard from a series of speakers on the topics of port development, how the port landscape was changing to accommodate new energy sources, and examples of digital tools – including AI – that are shaping a path toward more efficient port operations. Other sessions addressed why a more open dialogue between shipping companies, cargo owners and ports will be essential, particularly in the view of the transportation of new zero or near-zero fuels, globally.
