The bunkering of future marine fuels such as ammonia and methanol will involve considerable safety considerations. That is where ports can rely on the vast experience of the IAPH Clean Marine Fuels working group. The Clean Marine Fuels project started off with a focus on LNG bunkering. The working group behind the project developed a series of checklists and an accreditation tool that port authorities can use to vet LNG bunker suppliers. The focus of the tool is on safety and efficiency of bunkering operations. The scope of the working group has meanwhile extended to clean marine fuels, in line with global air quality and decarbonisation policies. Through an open, data-sharing information platform, the working group is building a knowledge base that will enable ports to supply and transfer clean marine fuels to ships. The Clean Marine Fuels working group met in Yokohamain the fourth week of October to discuss expanding its suite of best practices for LNG bunkering operations to include guidance on procedural and operational preparedness of a terminal to assure a safe handling of LNG-fuelled vessels, including a safe ship-to-ship LNG bunkering of the LNG-fuelled vessel alongside the terminal. The working group also unveiled an animated video to promote the bunkering accreditation tool for use in ports worldwide, which you can see below.
