The Kiribati Ports Authority (KPA) is Kiribati’s national port authority, responsible for managing the country’s principal ports and ensuring the efficient, safe, and secure movement of international cargo and vessels. KPA operates the ports of Betio (Tarawa) and Kiritimati and serves as a key facilitator of trade and economic development in Kiribati.

TC Days preliminary agenda revealed – register now!

The next IAPH Technical Committee Day will take place at the Hilton London Olympia on 2 November, the day before the 2026 IAPH World Ports Conference. This is a full day, in-person-only event, with nine technical sessions across three parallel streams, covering the hottest topics of the IAPH work program, followed by respective meetings of the three main technical committees on Climate and Energy, Data Collaboration and Risk and Resilience. The preliminary agenda has been released and IAPH members are invited to register their attendance at the technical sessions here. Topics to be addressed include IMO progress on decarbonizing shipping, nature and biodiversity in ports, climate resilience, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, port call optimization, safe handling of lithium-ion batteries, rehabilitation of port facilities and Public Private Partnerships, and sustainable cruise port accreditation. ESI and EPI to operate under IAPH umbrella

From January 2027, the Environmental Port Index (EPI) and IAPH’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will operate as complementary modules under the IAPH umbrella, thanks to an agreement signed between EPI and OceanScore, the administrator of ESI. This combination will give ports and shipowners a more coherent way to measure and reward cleaner shipping, via OceanScore’s shared and scalable technical platform. The framework is anchored in an operating agreement between EPI and OceanScore and a cooperation agreement between EPI and IAPH. The agreement brings together the two complementary approaches and creates a stronger foundation for port-based environmental incentives worldwide: ESI reflects a vessel’s overall environmental profile, while EPI uses actual operational data to measure its performance during individual port calls. Together, the two modules will give ports a broader basis for environmental incentive schemes and provide shipowners with a more consistent reporting framework.

IAPH Sustainability Awards: choose your winners!

You have until midnight on Friday 2 October to select your favourite finalists for the 2026 Sustainability Awards! Eighteen shortlisted projects have been selected by the independent expert jury, covering the six areas of interest of the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP). The public vote to decide the winners is open and can be viewed here. These outstanding projects were chosen from a list of 66 eligible entries by an expert jury, and scored based upon the agreed evaluation criteria. You can review the details of all the projects before submitting your choice for each category. The outcome of the public vote (30%), together with that of the jury evaluation (70%) will co-determine the winners. A seventh prize, the Akiyama Award, will go to the highest-placed IAPH Sustainability Awards submission from a Least Developed Country, or a Small Island Developing State. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony during the gala dinner of the World Ports Conference held at the iconic Natural History Museum in London on 4 November. ISPS Code: make your voice heard with IAPH

Ahead of a discussion to be held during the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting in London later this year, IAPH has been asked by the IMO Secretariat to seek the views of its members on whether, and how, member states should amend or revise the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. In order to ensure the collective voice of the world’s ports is heard in this discussion, IAPH has created a survey, responses to which will be analysed and which will inform the development of an IAPH Information Paper for consideration at MSC. The survey comprises 18 short questions, and has an estimated completion time of 15-20 minutes. You can begin the survey here. The closing date for responses is 18 September 2026.
