Port of Helsinki

Profile

The port of Helsinki was founded with the city itself in 1550. The port lies in four different harbour areas in different parts of the city centre. West Harbour is specialized in container transports, North Harbour in roro ferry transports. South Harbour is the liveliest passenger port in the Baltic Sea. Passenger ferries also carry lorries and trailers. Helsinki is also one of the most popular cruise ports in the Baltic Sea. Laajasalo Oil Harbour serves oil product import. The port serves both export and import needs for the Finnish foreign trade. There is also some transit and transshipment traffic to and from Russia. The port of Helsinki has dense scheduled direct ship connections to the Baltic Sea and the North Sea ports and to ports in nearly all of Europe’s coastal countries. The big development and construction plan is about to take place: moving the two cargo harbours from the city centre to one site in Vuosaari, 14 km to the east from the city centre. The construction works there are going on.
