The Port of Taichung, opened to public in 1976, is an international port excavated from sand beach. It was projected to cope with the fast-growing needs of the nation's economic development. It provides a gateway to central Taiwan so as to promote a balanced regional development for the whole Taiwan area.
At present, 46 deep-water wharves have been established. With most automatic and efficient equipment, the cargo handled were over 90.3 million tons in 2006 (including 1.20 million TEUs containers). Always keeping the concept “Acting, Serving, Engaging, Booming" in mind, this port is rapidly developing into one of the largest and busiest ports in Taiwan.
The future development project consists of a commercial port expansion plan and an industrial port development. The ultimate goal of this port is to build the port as a multi-purpose port with 83 deep-water wharves.
