The port Kaohsiung was a lagoon original and commenced to construct as commercial port in 1908, and totally destroyed during the World War II. The Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau was organized to manage to operate the port in 1945.
The Port of Kaohsiung is located on the southwestern coast of Taiwan and faced the key trade routes running through the Taiwan Strait and the Bashi Channel, Now the port is already one of the world’s busiest container terminals. It current serves as a hub port to Asia-Pacific trade. On the 1st of January 1998, stevedore Employment system has been rectified; since the employment and job arrangement become more commercial and effective.
After being awarded ISO-9002 certification by DNV Certification B.V. on March 5, 1998, for ensuring long-term maintained of environmental quality at the port of Kaohsiung, the port authority was certified under the ISO-14001 environmental Management Systems.
In order to enhance its reputation as a marine transportation hub, KHB endeavors to upgrade and ensured the highest safety standards for navigations, by investing in the top quality Vessel Traffic Management System. It was completed by the end of 2001 and beginning operation from then on.
Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau has completed 5 container terminals, and is planning to build the container terminal No.6 for future demands. The new container terminal will include 4 container berths with a water draft of 16 meters, and be scheduled to complete in 2009.
Port of Kaohsiung is fully compliant with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code issued by International Maritime Organization IMO, which came into effect on July 1,2004.
The Executive Yuan (Cabinet) has approved the established of Free Port at Kaohsiung Harbor on Mar. 18, 2004, which is expected to officially operate on Jan. 1,2005.
