Ideally located at the intersection of the 18,000-km coastline and 6,300-km Yangtze River, facing the boundless expanse of the ocean and backed by the vast hinterland, the Port of Shanghai is the largest port on the mainland of China, with excellent highway, railway and inland river connections.
The Port does not only serve the Yangtze delta, but also the whole Yangtze valley. Its imports and exports account for around one fourth of the country’s total. At present, the 20 largest container shipping companies in the world all have a strong presence in Shanghai, with shipping routes to 300-plus ports around the world.
The Port’s terminal facilities are mainly located on the both banks of the Huangpu River, the southern bank of the Yangtze Rive and the Yangshan Island. In 2005, it handled a total of 443 million tons of cargo volume and 18 million TEUs, ranking first and third in the world respectively.
To meet the needs of rapidly growing national economy and foreign trade, the Port has begun construction of the Yangshan deepwater port. The completion and operations of its two phases signify a major breakthrough in the building of the Shanghai international shipping centre.
The Shanghai Municipal Port Administration Bureau was established in January 2003, as a result of Port of Shanghai’s reform to separate the administration from the operations. It is a regulating institution under the Shanghai Municipal Government to exercise administration over the port and shipping affairs in Shanghai. As the port authority of Shanghai, its responsibilities include: studying and formulating port development plans and strategies, adjusting and allocating port resources, drawing and enforcing port laws and regulations, cultivating, regulating and supervising shipping market, maintaining port security and safety and developing exchange and cooperation relations with foreign ports on behalf of the Port of Shanghai.
