The Port of Nantong is one of the 14 Chinese coastal ports that were first open to the outside world. It is located on the northern shore of the Yangtse River and is the first estuary port from the Yellow Sea into the Yangtse River. It is designated as a major hub port by the state, since it enjoys the advantages of both the “golden coast” and the “golden waterway”(the Yangste River) . It has a vast economic hinterland that is backed by the North Jiangsu Plain and covers six provinces and one municipality in the Yangtse River Valley. Since the port was approved by the standing Committee of the National People’s Congress(NPC) to be open to foreign-flag vessels, it has had shipping links with 199 ports in 65 countries or regions around the world .
Under the jurisdiction of the Port of Nantong , there is a river shore length of 226km and a sea shore length of 210km, totaling 436km.The port has been rapidly expanded since the reform and opening-up policy was adopted . Currently there are 7port areas on the 31.5km-long deepwater shoreline of the Yangtse River. By 2004 the port of Nantong had 72 berths of 1,000dwt class or over, including 30ble to accommodate over 10,000dwt sea-going ships. In 2004, 7218.2million tons of cargo was handled by the port, 28.7 TEUs of containers. The port has three international container liner services to Japan, Korea and Hong Kong respectively, and several feeder liners linking to Shanghai Port which has liner services to European and North America. The port has become an important member of the port group of the Shanghai International Shipping Center, and a base of collection and distribution of large-volume bulk cargoes in foreign and domestic trade on the Yangtse River.
The Port of Nantong is expected to handle 12000 million tons of cargo in the 11th Five-year Plan period. The Port of Nantong will expand from the current 6 port areas to 10 port areas both on the Yangtse River and on the sea , to cater to the needs of local economic fevelopment. They include the eight port areas of Rugao , Tiansheng , Tongzhou , Rengang , Lanshan , Jianghai , Fumin and Haimen on the Yangtse River and Lusi Port area in Qidong County and Yangkou Port area in Rudong county. They will form a port cluster on the north wing of Shanghai. By the time these projects are complete, the port of Nantong will develop into a large and comprehensive international port with complete functions and complementary industries.
