Response to contingency
Natural Disasters and Preparedness
Ports as being situated on the sea coasts or along the rivers are vulnerable to natural disasters ranging from earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes and tsunamis. Faced with such a disaster, ports are forced to stop its normal operation, resulting in a temporary halt of ship and cargo handling and adversely affecting the welfare and economy of the region and nation they serve.
It is in this context that IAPH as an international organization seeks
and promotes international cooperation efforts to address the issue of
raising awareness and enhancing preparedness for natural disasters at an
international level, as exemplified by its resolutions adopted in 2005
in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004 and the US Gulf Coast hurricanes
2005.
