HOW MUCH DOES MEMBERSHIP COST?

Cost of regular membership

The calculation basis for regular membership dues is your port’s cargo volume expressed in metric tonnes, applying a weighted formula of 100% for general cargo (including containers and roro) and 20% for dry and liquid bulk cargo. In short: your general cargo volume counts in full, your bulk cargo volume only counts for one fifth.

Once you know the calculation basis, you can determine how many membership dues units your port will subscribe to, as summarised in the table below. This table also indicates the level of membership dues. IAPH membership dues are based on Special Drawing Rights (SDR) as established and employed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As SDR is not an actual currency, it must be converted to US dollar, Euro, British pound or Japanese yen. The table below includes the conversion applicable for 2021, using the exchange rates of 10 December 2020.

This example illustrates how it works:

Port X handled 5,500,000 metric tonnes of cargo last year, of which 3,250,000 metric tonnes of general cargo (including containers and roro) and 2,250,000 metric tonnes of bulk cargo (dry and liquid bulk).

The calculation basis is (3,250,000 x 1.0) + (2,250,000 x 0.2) = 3,700,000 mt

As a result, Port X subscribes for 3 membership dues units and pays 3,798 EUR membership fee.

Cost of associate membership

The associate membership due level depends on which category of associate membership your organisation falls in. There are five categories:

A: port users, such as shipping, stevedoring, warehousing businesses and port facility lessees and operators Port related businesses, such as manufacturers of port related products and providers of port and cargo related services including logistics and land business transporters of waterborne cargo, and port consultants

B: governmental agencies, commissions or associations of any kind, other than those qualified to be regular members

C: private or proprietary ports, such as those operated in connection with a steel mill or an oil refinery

D: public or private corporations, individuals or agencies engaged in educational or journalistic activities related to port functions and individuals who are not connected with a port related business for profit

E: individuals who are associates, employees or retired employees of Regular Members or other Associate Members

Once you know which category your organization belongs to, you can determine the membership dues. For category A organizations there is a further subdivision, based on annual sales proceeds. The table below provides the full overview. IAPH membership dues are based on Special Drawing Rights (SDR) as established and employed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As SDR is not an actual currency, it must be converted to US dollar, Euro, British pound or Japanese yen.
