50th Anniversary - Golden Jubilee

In 2005, the IAPH marked its 50th anniversary of founding, staging a series of celebrations across the globe, as follows:

IAPH 50th Anniversary Tokyo Forum, Tokyo, Japan

The Forum kicked off a series of the IAPH 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2005, attended by some 400 participants representing ports and port-related organizations in 10 countries. Among guests of honor attending this significant event were the Honorable Kazuo Kitagawa, Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure & Transport, Mr. Norio Ohga, Honorary Chairman, Sony Corporation and other dignitaries. The IAPH members attending the IAPH Yokohama Executive Committee Meeting, 10-13 January, took part in the event to witness this cornerstone event in the history of IAPH.
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary Tokyo Forum, commemorative goods were produced, including a CD-ROM, “Uniting the World’s Ports”, a brief history of IAPH, a booklet entitled “Ports in Your Life” and a special plaque.

Asia/Oceania Regional Meeting, Tehran, Iran

As part of the 6th Asia/Oceania Regional Meeting, Tehran, Iran, some 150 delegates from the local maritime circle and IAPH regional membership celebrated the 50th anniversary of the association. The participants were honored to have the presence of Eng. Rahmati, Iranian Minister of Roads & Transportation and Mr. Ahamd Donymali, Deputy Minister of Roads & Transportation. The party will be fondly remembered not only for the warm welcome from the hosts but also for the post-dinner.

Africa/Europe Regional Meeting in London, U.K.

Some 120 people including those attending the IAPH Africa/Europe Regional Meeting and other guests representing the London maritime circle gathered at the Somerset House in London to celebrate the IAPH's Golden Jubilee in the presence of HRH The Duke of York. The event was co-hosted by the Port of London Authority and the Associated British Ports. As the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, the Duke delivered a congratulatory address stressing the importance of the role of a port in the world trade context, as well as of its publicity widely to the general public.

IAPH World Ports Conference, Shanghai, China , 21-27 May 2005/09/09

Attended by some 700 delegates from about 60 countries representing the world port community, the Shanghai Conference was the highlight of the 50th Anniversary celebrations staged in 2005. The participants were honored to have Mr. Zhang Chunxian, Chinese Minister of Communications, and Mr. Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, address the delegates. The event was significant in that a donation raised at the conference in the amount of US$25,000 was made to “Save the Children” to assist in their global child education program in developing countries.

IAPH Executive Committee Meeting, Los Angeles, USA, 5-7 October, 2005

IAPH went back to its hometown when the IAPH Executive Committee (EXCO) Meeting convened in October 2005 in Los Angeles/San Pedro. On October 6, an evening reception for 50th anniversary celebration was held at Marina Hotel, Los Angeles, attracting some 200 delegates including guests form local port community. Next morning, some 100 delegates from 38 ports and maritime organizations gathered to attend a ceremonial session.

Among the guests of honor invited were US Secretary of Transportation, Norman Mineta, delivering a keynote address, emphasizing the importance of maritime commerce to international trade and the greater need for world ports to stand together to confront the issues and challenge facing the international community, Los Angles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, congratulating the event taking place at its birthplace, and Mr. Lloyd Menveg, one of the IAPH's Founder Honorary Members, who had chaired the inaugural IAPH Conference in Los Angeles exactly 50 years ago.

Africa/Europe Regional Meeting, Nairobi, Kenya, 5-8 December 2005

To conclude the year-round celebration, some 300 people gathered in Nairobi, Kenya for the last party - the opening ceremony of the IAPH-PAPC (Pan African Port Cooperation) Conference, December 4-8, 2005. The guests of honor invited were Mr. Moody Awori, Kenya's 1st Vice President, who made keynote address, and Mr. Gerrishon Ikiria, Permanent Secretary, Kenya's Ministry of Transport.

The IAPH-PAPC Conference was hosted by Kenya Ports Authority, during which IAPH's Africa/Europe Regional Meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mr. Gichiri Ndua, 2nd IAPH Vice President, Kenya Ports Authority.
