IAPH submits its report on ISPS Code implentation survey to IMO and UNCTADIAPH submited to IMO and UNCTAD its report on ISPS Code implementation survey conducted in August 2006 to gauge the current practice of enforcing port security at its member ports since its implementation on 1 July 2004, focusing on such category areas of conducting exercises/drills, training of security personnel, audit/review. The survey revealed that the ISPS Code implementation has brought about positive effects to the port industry by means of improved awareness for port security and the implementation is still an on-going process to further enhance port security.With the new global security regime now in place, IAPH has recently endorsed and taken a holistic approach to the further implementation of security measures, not only confined to the port and shipping, but also encompassing the entire logistics and supply chains, in cooperation with the World Customs Organization’s (WCO)’s working group tasked with formulating and implementing a new scheme called "Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade" and with the International Organization for Standardization ( ISO) initiating development of 28000 series of supply chain security standards to support the development of global logistics. |

IAPH Shanghai Conference was a great success!The 24th IAPH World Conference was held in Shanghai, China, 21-27 May 2005, hosted by Shanghai International Port(Group) Co.,Ltd (Mr. Lu Haihu, President), attended by some 1,000 participants including 483 registered delegates and their accompanying persons from 57 countries, as well as some 500 invited Chinese guests. Among them were Mr. Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai City and Mr. Zhang Chunxian, China's Minister of Communications.A the Opening Session, the Minister made a keynote speech stressing a rapid growth level of Chinese port industry and it's future prospect of further development, and offered his congratulations on IAPH's 50th Anniversary. Mr. Tommy Thomsen, CEO of Container Business, A.P. Moller- Maersk Group, kicked off the working seesions by saying that much larger and more efficient ports and terminals are now needed to accommodate bigger ships". |

IAPH
Asia/Oceania Regional Meeting was successfully held in Bandung, Indonesia,
February 3-5, 2010, hosted by Indonesia Port Corporations I, II, II and IV.
Nearly 280 participants from 13 countries mostly in Asia and Oceania, especially
Indonesia, participated in the event.
IAPH Africa/Europe Regional Meeting was successfully held in Hamburg, Germany,
November 16-18, 2009, hosted by Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). Nearly 100 IAPH members
from 24 countries mostly in Africa and Europe participated in the event.
IAPH President Gichiri Ndua represented IAPH and made a keynote
presentation at the opening ceremony of the Port & Shipping Development
Forum Asia 2009, 15-16 October 2009, Shanghai, China.
The 26th IAPH World Ports Conference was successfully held in Genoa, Italy, 25-29 May, hosted by the Port Authority of Genoa. This biennial event of world port leaders with the theme of
"Oriented to the market – Open to the future”, for the first time in Italy, attracting over 700 participants from nearly 60 countries in the world was held for the first time in Italy.
Attended by more than 150 delegates from 15 countries in Asia and Oceania,
the 9th IAPH Asia/Oceania Regional Meeting was held in Singapore, 25-27

IAPH was invited to present the port industry's perspctive at the UNCTAD's
Expert Meeting on "Maritime Transport & the Climate Change Challenge",
Geneva, Switzerland, 16-18 February 2009, attended by some 180 delegates
from 60 countries and 20 UN agencies, intergovernmental and international
organizations.
The IAPH Africa/Europe Regional Meeting was held in Djibouti, in conjunction
with the 7th PAPC (Pan-African Ports Cooperation) Conference, 15-18 December,
attended by some 300 delegates representing the port and maritime sectors in
Africa and the Middle East, including some 100 IAPH members in the region.
The World Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI) Symposium was organized by the IAPH
Port Environment Committee, 23 - 25 November, in Los Angeles, USA. At this
inaugural meeting of the WPCI, port case study examples on climate action,
carbon footprint inventory, modeling approaches and innovation of terminal
equipment were presented and reviewed.
President O.C. Phang made presentation "Perspectives and Cooperation of East Asia Logistics
Business in 21st Century" at the 2008 Incheon International Logistics Forum, Incheon, Korea, which was organized, 7-9 October,
to coincide with and celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony of Incheon New Port designed to be a hub port of Yellow sea Rim and a gateway to the metropolitan region in the nation.
Secretary General Inoue made presentation "Challenges of the World's Ports"at the 1st International Conference on the Future of Russian Ports, St. Petersburg, Russia, 7 October,
which was organized to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Association of Sea Commercial Ports of Russia, and in conjunction with the 9th TRANSTEC-"International Transport Exhibition and Conference".
Mr. Hiroshi Kusaka, former IAPH Secretary General, passed away on August
25th 2008 at the age of 80. From 1977 to 1999 he served the Association
in a selfless and devoted manner. Among his achievements, he engineered
and orchestrated the IAPH 2000 Task Force to strengthen IAPH activity toward
the age of globalization in the late 1990s. In 1998, he was honored by
Emperor of Japan who granted him the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays
with Rosette, one of the highest honors of Japan. He is survived by his
wife, Yuko, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
IAPH took an active part in the World Ports Climate Conference (WPCC)
convened in Rotterdam, 9-11 July 2008, adopting at its closing session the
"World Ports Climate Declaration", a committment to reduce CO2 emissions and
improve air quality.
Attended by some 90 IAPH members from 26 countries, the IAPH Board of Directors
convened in Dunkirk, France, 15-17 April 2008, for its annual meeting. On 16
April, the Board adopted two resolutions: one calling for an prompt and early
ratification of the IMO conventions and the other for fighting against global
warming.
IAPH President Phang delivered a keynote address before some 1,000 coastal and
port engineers assembled at the 7th International Conference on Coastal &
Port Engineering in Developing Countries (COPEDEC), now a part of PIANC, Dubai,
UAE, 24-28 February 2008, emphasizing the role of ports as facilitators in this
The IAPH Executive Committee (Exco) met in Shizuoka, Japan, 9-12 October
2006, attended by some 50 participants from 15 coutries. The meeting featured
sessions on Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) and LNG handling.
IAPH President, Tom Kornegay was invited as a speaker at PorTech Asia 2006 held in Shanghai during September 26-27. Under the theme "Seaport Stability in Unstable Times", Kornegay talked about framework of measures against terrorism and role of ports in such framework, and stressed, "Security is all about people being aware, VERY AWARE." "We as a WORLD must partner for this is the only way we can fight this war on terrorism. A war that we have NO OPTION but to win."
