Cyprus Ports Authority

Profile

Cyprus Ports Authority is an autonomous semi-governmental body established by law in 1973. It is responsible for the management, operation, maintenance and development of all ports in Cyprus. Sea-borne traffic is serviced in Cyprus by a modern and highly integrated national port system comprising the multipurpose ports of Lemesos (Limassol) and Larnaka, the industrial port of Vassiliko and the three specialised oil terminals at Larnaka, Dekeleia, and Moni. Cyprus ports have over the years developed into transhipment and excursion centres for the region. During the last couple of years the Authority, is working towards the expansion and enlargement of Lemesos port, container handling facilities. Αs a first step, the western terminal’s stacking area has been enlarged to 234,000 sq m. Currently the Authority is evaluating tenders for the deepening of the western container terminal to -16m and the turning and entrance circle to 17m. A feasibility study is also expected to be completed before the end of 2007, for the expansion of the western container terminal quay wall to about 500m. With respect to Larnaka port, tenders are being evaluated for the transfer of the port on a DBOFT basis to the successful tenderer. The aim of the project is to make Larnaka port the main passenger and cruise ship port of Cyprus, by effectively joining Larnaka port and marina into a huge complex that may even include hotels and housing units. Evaluation process is expected to be completed by the end of the year (2007). Cyprus ports operate undisturbed. Berthing / unberthing and cargo handling operations are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cyprus ports are fully computerised providing direct access to our customers electronically, have free trade facilities and simplified procedures while at the same time they are fully compliant with the ISPS Code, since 1st July 2004.
