Keelung was opened as a commercial port in 1863 and a naval defense headquarters was set up here in 1872. In the Ching Dynasty, China’s last reigning house, Liu, Ming-Chuan, Governor of Taiwan, initiated progress for harbor development and constructed a railroad linking Keelung with Taipei. Under his management, the first wharf in Keelung Harbor was completed in 1886.
In order to improve the port facilities and service, the port authority tries every effort to conquer its natural disadvantages to dredge the channel, berth alongside and turning basin, and to construct the West Bank Linking Road, and that already have being helped in boosting the port’s competitiveness.
The Port of Keelung has been accredited by ISO on Environment, Harbor Management, and Container Terminal Operation for years. In addition, the port has also fulfilled the Free Trade Zone target; it has functioned since Sep. 30, 2004.
To provide with better service for our customers, the construction for the Port of Taipei has being started gradually. It is scheduled to complete the totally 7 container berths by 2014 with an approximately capacity of 2.8 million TEUs. Furthermore, the Port of Su-ao is expected to get a steady growth and planned as a diversified recreational port.
