Located on the southern rim of Mainland China, the Port of Hong Kong is one of the world’s busiest container ports. It continues to flourish as a hub port serving the Southern Asia Pacific Region and the needs of Southern China’s burgeoning Guangdong Province. Hong Kong acts as an entrepot or multimodal gateway to the vast Mainland China Market. In Hong Kong major port facilities owned and operated by the private sector include:- *The Container Terminals 1-9 at the Kwai Chung area; *The Ocean Terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui; *The River Trade Terminal at Tuen Mun. In addition, the government also provides the following port facilities: *31 harbour mooring buoys for use by commercial shipping; *3 ferry terminals providing centralized ferry services to and from Macau and other ports in Mainland China. Hong Kong’s container terminal capacity is now over 19 million TEUs per year.
Through close co-operation with neighbouring Mainland ports and share use of infrastructure, information and technology, shipping services in the region have been enhanced.
