Antwerp Port Authority

Profile

With an international maritime traffic of over 160 million tonnes per year, Antwerp is in the top four of the world’s biggest ports. It is a multi-functional logistics centre in the middle of Europe. Every year about 16.000 ships from over 100 different nations call at the port. Antwerp offers some 300 regular liners services to over 800 overseas destinations at competitive freight rates. The port also has an important transit function. The Antwerp docker is highly skilled and can treat a diversity of goods. The port has 4.8 million m² of covered warehouse space (perishable goods, hazardous cargo). Antwerp is linked to the main industrial areas in Europe by railway (about 960 km of port railway system), inland shipping and road. Due to the ever growing port industry and trade, and the growth of vessels, infrastructure is being constantly adapted. A new tidal container dock is being built. Rail capacity has been increased by building a new container Hub north of the Antwerp-North marshalling yards as an addition to the capacity offered by the rail container terminals in the Antwerp dock area.
